Picasso at the Lapin Agile by Steve Martin.
October 14 - November 1, 2009
OK. OK. 1904. Paris. Einstein walks into a bar. No. No. Wait. Picasso walks into a bar. No. Hold on. Picasso and Einstein walk into a bar. Yeah! Then what? Then Charles Dabernow Schmendiman walks in, too. Who? Exactly. Then what? Laughter, comedy, absurdity and some delightfully zany musings on the nature of art, science and the twentieth century, as only Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin) could render them. Plus a royal visit.

Syracuse Opera
Syracuse Opera has planned two projects to tie into Turner to Cézanne: a production of La Bohème that features large replicas of Impressionist art and posters as part of the scenery (designed by Boyd Ostroff for the Opera Company of Philadelphia); and a series of art song recitals based on works of art in the exhibit to be performed in the galleries and in the Everson Museum’s Hosmer Auditorium.
La Bohème will be performed on October 23 and 25, 2009, in the John H. Mulroy Civic Center Theaters at Oncenter. The central work in Turner to Cézanne is Renoir’s La Parisienne. We plan to recreate Renoir’s art onstage as one of Mimi’s costumes and we are using La Parisienne as the advertising image for Bohème.
The art song recitals were inspired by an ongoing relationship with mezzo-soprano Adriana Zabala, who was last in Syracuse in the Spring of 2007 for The Merry Widow. She is also artistic director of the Southeastern Festival of Song (SEFoS) and has specialized in preparing song recitals paired with works of art for museums like the Dallas Museum of Art.
She has created a program called “L’heure exquise”, musical impressions from Turner to Cézanne that pairs 10 works in the exhibit with art songs by Elgar, Debussy, Ravel, Fauré and Duparc set to the poetry of Verlaine, Hugo and Moréas, among others. Spanning one hundred years from English Romanticism through Impressionism, and paving the way into the 20th century, each pairing of visual and musical art will inspire a deep resonance of both sight and sound in the works, and of mind and heart in the listener. There will be performances both in the galleries with the actual paintings and in the Everson’s recital hall where we will project images of the paintings.
