Join us for an evening of art and lively discussion about the past and future of local news.
In their heyday, local newspapers were much more than just headlines—they were the glue that held communities together. They provided balanced information for the right, left, and middle, and played a vital role in shining a light on city, county, and state government. But as local newspapers have steadily declined, resources have been stretched and polarization has risen. While we can’t go back, what’s the best way forward?
Join us on October 24 at 5:30pm for a dynamic panel discussion moderated by Margaret Talev, journalist and Kramer Director at Syracuse University’s Institute for Democracy, Journalism & Citizenship. Panelists will include Tim Atseff, artist and former journalist, alongside Tim Kennedy, Regional President of Advance Local, Maximilian Eyle, Executive Director of Central Current, and Joshua Darr, Associate Professor at Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Communications. Together, they’ll explore the challenges and opportunities in rebuilding local journalism through digital, social media, commercial, and nonprofit efforts—both in Syracuse and beyond.
Following the discussion, join Tim Atseff for a special guided tour of his exhibition, Final Edition, a powerful tribute to the decline of local newspapers and the impact this loss has had on our communities.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to engage with leaders in local journalism, explore the future of news in our region, and experience Tim Atseff’s thought-provoking artistic reflection on the changing media landscape.
