Everson Museum in Syracuse tries something new: ‘Plazapalooza’

The Everson Museum of Art is hosting a one-day event festival titled “Plazapalooza” on Saturday, June 18, on the plaza as well as inside the museum.
The event will include a variety of activities, beginning at 11 a.m. and going
until 8 p.m. The day’s events will include free admission to all of the museum’s exhibitions, as well as a Makers’ Market, music, a beer garden and a variety of local food trucks.
Free admission into the museum for the day will allow access to new exhibitions, including “Kindred Beasts: The 2016 Everson Biennial” and “Kate Gilmore: Touch like this, Hold like that” which will include live performance art throughout the day on the plaza.
Renee Storiale, Community and Public Relations Manager, described the festival as an event to celebrate arts and creativity in the community.
“It’s basically anything that’s artistic and creative,” Storiale said. “We’ve encouraged people to come and get involved.”
Storiale said that the event is new to the Everson, and is a combination of several events that the museum has done in the past over the summer.
“We’re putting them all together to make it really a big bash that everyone can come to,” Storiale said.
Admission to the event is free, and the only activity that has a fee is the Raku Firing put on by the Syracuse Ceramics Guild from noon to 4 p.m., which costs $15.
“It’s really important for us to keep it free and open to the public,” Storiale said. “There’s really nothing you have to pay for all day unless you do the Raku Firing. And then the beer garden, you buy your own drinks, and there’s food trucks where you can buy food. Everything else that day is free, so anyone should be able to come and enjoy.”
The Makers’ Market, which runs from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., is an event during the day where local artists and artisans will be selling their wares.
“I think there’s a desire to see that kind of thing in Syracuse, to see what working artists are doing and to support them,” Storiale said.
The festival will also have food trucks available for visitors to buy food, which is in partnership with the Syracuse Food Truck Association. The local food truck vendors will include Toss ‘n’ Fire Wood-Fired Pizza and The Bite Box.
Other events throughout the day include art making from noon to 4 p.m., a sidewalk sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., family tours from 1 to 3 p.m., dancing on the plaza from 1 to 3 p.m., and the Empire Brewing Company sponsored beer garden from 5 to 8 p.m.
During the beer garden event, there will be live music by opening act Joey Esce from 5 to 6 p.m., with the headliner Pale Green Stars performing from 6:15 to 8 p.m.
