Brooklyn-based artist Steffani Jemison examines how knowledge is constructed and legitimized through work that includes video, sculpture, installation, and sound. Sensus Plenior is a study of language, gesture, and movement through the practice of pantomime in the Black church. The video features Reverend Susan Webb, leader of the Master Mime Ministry of Harlem, engaging in a sequence of choreographed gestures. By transforming the language of gospel songs into physical movements, Webb uses her body to channel the meaning and mystery of the Word.
Presented in conjunction with Urban Video Project’s exhibition Steffani Jemison: Figure 8, which runs from April 15 through June 5, 2021.
