FULL — Session 1: July 7-11

In the morning, students will focus on storytelling through many mediums and fiber craft with local artist and griot Vanessa Johnson. Students will learn about creating characters that contribute to the narrative in stories of their own creation. Alongside character creation, students will engage in sculpture, drawing, and other mediums that engage their storytelling instincts through many methods. In the afternoon, local mixed-media artist Caitlin Marx will guide students through a variety of creative problem-solving projects, including functional cardboard furniture, visible mending, and more. Students will also explore more traditional artmaking including color theory, cyanotypes, and collaborative drawing through an exquisite corpse drawing exercise.

We request that students bring in a ‘damaged’ or flawed garment to use for the visible mending project.

FULL — Session 2: July 14-18

Mornings will offer students the opportunity to work with Vanessa Johnson and explore the world of artmaking and the animal world simultaneously. Students will create many projects exploring stories and experiences through animal voices, while using mixed media and new materials. Projects will include fabric, paint, and more. Caitlin Marx will guide students through afternoons of exploration and artmaking through many methods. Students have the opportunity to try many new artmaking methods; decoupage, abstract painting, and sculpture making all come together. Caitlin will also explore the concept of Art Therapy with students and allow them to explore their own inner worlds through the creation of art.

Session 3: July 21-25

Local artist Lottie Caiella will take students through a week of multimedia activities and experimentation that will explore many aspects of artmaking. Through group projects such as creating a collaborative painted field of flowers and a large group portrait together students will find joy in creating work that involves collaboration and composition. Lottie will also explore narrative and story, by guiding students through activities such as bookmaking and a unique self-portrait that tells each student’s story. Color, medium, and other technical art applications will be introduced in an engaging way throughout all of Lottie’s work with students.

Students will need a printed black and white portrait of themselves. 8.5X11 inches.

There are no classes July 28-August 1

FULL — Session 4: August 4-8

Explore the finer points of painting local artist Parfait Nsubayi in the mornings through all kinds of painting exercises and activities. Parfait will visit technical skills like composition, color, and more with students while also engaging in activities that allow students to practice their painting. Activities like observational drawing, collage, and more are woven into projects where students will also explore new mediums and techniques. During the afternoons students will get creative with ceramics and sculpture with local artist and art teacher Rachael Sturgess. Students will use a variety of mixed media to create sculptures, paintings, and more while learning new artmaking techniques. Students will have hands-on experience using materials to create sculptures; soap, clay, and plaster all await students during projects with Rachael.

FULL — Session 5: August 11-15

Students will explore self-portraits through collage and new drawing methods such as creating a portrait with only one line. Mornings will also bring experimenting with abstract painting, oil pastels, and other mediums through other projects. During the afternoons, students will explore nature-related projects.
