To celebrate the opening of Sascha Brastoff: California King, join Sascha Brastoff’s biographer Steve Conti and curator Garth Johnson for a wild ride through Brastoff’s career. We’ll trace Brastoff’s origins as a studio artist, his World War II performances as “G.I. Carmen Miranda”, his Midcentury Modern dinnerware empire, and his artistic experiments that ranged from explosive magnesium sculpture to his pioneering work with holographic jewelry. Conti and Johnson will also discuss Brastoff’s role as a hub of L.A.’s Queer scene, his 1940s foray into Surrealism, and of course his infamous pet monkeys, Natalie and Liz. We’ll share a trove of unpublished photographs and ephemera, as well as many colorful anecdotes from Brastoff’s incomparable career.
